Amazon PPC Negative Keywords: Cut Wasted Ad Spend
Amazon sellers waste an estimated 25–40% of ad spend on search terms that will never convert. Disciplined negative-keyword management is the single fastest way to recover 20–30% of that budget — without adding a dollar. Here's how to do it.

What negative keywords do
A negative keyword tells Amazon not to show your ad for a given search term. Without them, your auto and broad campaigns quietly serve ads for irrelevant queries — you pay for the clicks, and they never buy. The most profitable PPC accounts often have 3–5× more negatives than positive targets.
Step 1 — pull your Search Term report
In Seller Central: Advertising → Campaign Manager → Reports → Search Term report (Sponsored Products). Export the last 30–60 days as CSV. This report shows the actual customer search terms your ads matched — the raw material for finding waste.
Step 2 — find the money drains
Sort or filter for terms with spend but zero orders. A classic rule: any term with 5+ clicks and 0 sales is draining budget. Also flag high-ACoS terms — ones converting, but so unprofitably you're losing money on each sale.
Example: a term with 20 clicks, $31 spend, and 0 orders isn't "underperforming" — it's pure waste, and it repeats every period until you stop it.
Step 3 — add them as negatives
Add the wasted terms as Negative Exact at the ad-group (and sometimes campaign) level. Use Negative Exact for specific junk terms, and Negative Phrase when a whole theme is irrelevant (e.g. "free", "used", a competitor brand you can't win).
Step 4 — do it on a schedule
Search-term hygiene isn't one-and-done. New irrelevant terms appear every week as Amazon's auto-targeting explores. Sellers who review negatives weekly keep ACoS meaningfully lower than those who "set and forget".
Common mistakes
- Negating too early — a term with 2 clicks and no order might just need more data. Set a clicks/spend threshold first.
- Only negating in one campaign — the same junk term can drain multiple campaigns; negate everywhere it appears.
- Ignoring high-ACoS converters — zero-order terms are obvious; slow bleeders hide in "it's converting" terms.
